Hair mask, leave-in or detangler? What each step does
A mask, a leave-in and a rinse-out detangler sit at different points of wash day. Compare what each is for and how long it stays on, using one matched Biolage line.

A mask, a leave-in conditioner and a detangler can all promise softer hair, which is why they are easy to confuse. The difference is not the bottle. It is when it goes on and whether it comes off.
To keep the comparison fair, this guide uses three products from one line we carry, Biolage Hydra Source, which Biolage makes for dry hair. The same questions work for any brand on our hair shelf.
Three steps, side by side
Deep Treatment Mask
When it goes on
On wet hair after shampoo, left for 3 to 5 minutes.
Rinse or leave in
Rinse out.
Detangling Solution
When it goes on
On wet hair after shampoo, left for 1 to 3 minutes.
Rinse or leave in
Rinse out, then style as usual.
Daily Leave-In Cream
When it goes on
On washed hair, ends first, then worked toward the root and combed through.
Rinse or leave in
Do not rinse.

What each one is for
Biolage describes the Detangling Solution as its conditioning step: it detangles, softens and controls static and frizz. In this line it takes the place a rinse-out conditioner takes in other routines.
The Deep Treatment Mask is the richer, longer rinse-out step. The Leave-In Cream stays on after you leave the shower, so it keeps working while you comb and style.
The American Academy of Dermatology advises conditioner after washing: on the ends for fine or straight hair, and along the whole length for dry or curly hair. Biolage's leave-in directions also start at the ends.

Choose by the moment that frustrates you
- Knots in the shower, before you comb: a rinse-out detangling conditioner is the step to look at.
- Hair that still feels dry after your usual conditioner: consider adding a mask on some wash days in place of the regular conditioning step.
- Hair that feels dry or frizzy once it is out of the shower: a leave-in is the step that stays with you through styling.
- Fine hair that goes flat easily: try one step at a time, and use a small amount of any leave-in, starting at the ends.
A wash-day order
The mask and detangling solution both rinse out. The leave-in cream stays in your hair. If you use Biolage Hydra Source Conditioning Balm, the brand recommends replacing it with the mask once a week.
- 1Shampoo as usual.
- 2Apply the mask or detangling solution to wet hair. The mask directions say 3 to 5 minutes; the detangling solution says 1 to 3. Rinse thoroughly. Check your own bottle or tub for its instructions.
- 3Wrap or blot hair with a towel instead of rubbing it dry.
- 4If you use the leave-in cream, start at the ends and comb it through. Leave it in.
- 5Style as usual.
