Fine hair: mousse, root lift or texture spray?
Three stylers that add body to fine or flat hair, and where each goes: mousse through damp lengths, root spray at the scalp, texture spray on dry hair to finish.

Fine hair can look flat within an hour of styling, and the shelf offers several products that all say volume. They are not interchangeable. Each is designed for a different part of the hair and a different moment in styling.
Lift starts at the root while hair is damp. Texture is added once it is dry. This guide uses three stylers we carry to show where each fits.
Where each styler goes
Pureology Weightless Volume Mousse

A golf-ball-sized amount through sections of damp hair, roots to ends, then style.
What it is for
All-over body. Pureology lists fine, flat hair and a soft hold.
Kenra Root Lifting Spray 13

Living Proof Dry Volume & Texture Spray

What it is for

Mousse or root spray?
Choose mousse when the whole head looks flat and you want body through the lengths. Choose a root spray when the lengths are fine but the hair lies flat against the scalp.
Pureology's own advice is to work mousse into damp hair before a blow-dry for all-over body. Kenra's directions put the root spray only at the root area. Many routines use one or the other; if you use both, keep the root spray at the roots and a small amount of mousse on the lengths.

When a texture spray fits
A dry texture spray is a finishing step. Living Proof makes its spray for fine, flat or thin hair, to use on dry hair at any time, and says it lightly absorbs oil. That makes it useful on day two, or to add grip before pinning hair up.

A fine-hair styling routine
- 1After washing, towel-blot until hair is damp, not dripping.
- 2Apply mousse through the lengths, or root spray at the scalp, following the product's directions.
- 3Blow-dry, lifting hair away from the scalp at the roots.
- 4Once hair is dry, mist texture spray where you want more shape, and tousle with your fingers.

Heat, gently
Pureology and Living Proof both say their formulas include heat protection. The American Academy of Dermatology still advises limiting blow-drying and hot tools, using low or medium heat settings, and using a product that protects hair from heat.
