My hair feels dry. Where do I start?

Pureology describes Hydrate Shampoo as a moisturizing shampoo for normal to thick, dry, color-treated hair, so check that stated hair type against your own before choosing it. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends following shampoo with conditioner to help with moisture and detangling. A moisturizing shampoo does not replace that separate step.

In our store the two words point to different steps. A moisturizing shampoo is a cleanser. K18 describes its leave-in mask as a treatment for hair exposed to bleach, color, chemical services or heat, with its own application sequence and schedule. If you are replacing your shampoo, you are choosing a cleanser. If you are adding a treatment, you are adding a step. Deciding which one you want first makes the rest of the choice simpler. How do I use the K18 leave-in mask?

Check your bottle size first. Pump volumes differ between sizes, so a dose for one size does not scale to another. This is K18's leave-in routine. Wash your hair, leaving conditioner out of this step. Blot away excess water with a towel; the hair should stay damp. For the 50 mL bottle, begin with one pump and increase only if needed, within K18's one-to-three-pump range. For the 15 mL mini, begin with three; its stated range is three to nine. Distribute from the ends upward. Wait the full four minutes before combing or adding another product. Leave the mask in your hair. After the wait, comb gently and continue with styling.

K18's product directions call for four to six consecutive shampoos at the start, then use as needed. Its product page also recommends clarifying first for heavy product users. Follow the directions supplied with your product: an initial course is a different question from a maintenance interval.

K18's own routine guide allows a leave-in conditioner after the four-minute wait. Apply it only after that pause, and follow its label. That is an optional leave-in step, not an instruction to rinse the mask out. Conditioner is left out of the wash itself on a K18 day, so use the K18 sequence for that wash rather than your usual order.

When should I detangle, wet or dry?

The American Academy of Dermatology gives different guidance by texture. For thick, curly hair it suggests detangling in the shower while conditioner is still in the hair. For straight hair it suggests letting hair dry a little before combing. For curls or coils between washes, its curly-hair guide recommends thoroughly wetting the hair, adding leave-in conditioner and working in sections. In every case, use a wide-tooth comb on wet hair, begin near the ends and work higher gradually, and blot with a towel or T-shirt rather than rubbing.
